Email and Internet access can shrink the distances between professional colleagues, and be a cheap and easily updated source of information, both locally and internationally.
International Pharmacy Organisations
American Pharmaceutical Association. The Journal of the American Pharmaceutical Association (very little on-line) and Pharmacy Today are also on this site. Find it at http://www.aphanet.org
American Society of Health System Pharmacists. Find it at http://www.ashp.org
The Society of Hospital Pharmacists of Australia
SAAHIP is developing closer ties with the SHPA. This organisation runs committees of
specialty practice in a number of areas. The co-ordinators may be contacted by email at
shpa@vicnet.net.au or
find it at http://home.vicnet.net.au/~shpa/shpa1.htm
The Rural Pharmacy Network, also in Australia, can be contacted by email at
anne.leversha@med.monash.edu.au
More information at http://www.monash.edu.au/informatics/ruralhealth/
South African Pharmacy Organisations
Pharmaceutical Society of South Africa. The PSSA has just launched a web site,
which should also include information on related associations. This will hopefully become
a useful source of information to pharmacists as more information is added to the site.
Find it at http://www.pharmnet.co.za
South African Association of Hospital & Institutional Pharmacists (SAAHIP)
Find it at http://www.saahip.org.za
Organisations with information which may be of interest to pharmacists too:
RAMS: Representative Association of Medical Schemes
RAMS make the various Scale of Benefits documents available for downloading from their
site. They also have a listing of the Medical Aids who have web sites.
Find it at http://www.rams.co.za
MASA: Medical Association of South Africa
There is some useful information available here, after you have completed a
registration process. Some of the resources are however only available to medical
practitioners, and sadly only the contents and occasional articles of the SAMJ are
available from the web site. If either your modem or your patience is choked by the
complex site design, there is a text-only version!
Find it at http://www.masa.co.za
Pharmweb
Pharmweb has been mentioned before in this column, but as probably the single most
useful source of international pharmacy information, it deserves another mention. The main
server based in the UK can be found at http://www.pharmweb.net
, although it should be faster to access the local mirror site in South Africa, at http://www.puk.ac.za/pwmirror/
PharmInfoNet, the Pharmaceutical Information Network, http://pharminfo.com , also has a host of mostly clinical information.
Some of the Pharmacy Schools

Rhodes: http://www.ru.ac.za/departments/pharm/
