What is CPD and why is it so important?

CPD (Continuing Professional Development) for Pharmacists is a voluntary programme that has been undertaken by the Pharmaceutical Society of South Africa of which SAAHIP. is one of the sectors. This is in line with our colleagues in the other health care professions registered with the Health Professions’ Council (HPCSA), who introduced a compulsory CPD programme a couple of years ago. This compulsory system has been found to be flawed and that is why Pharmacy has gone the route of a voluntary system. This does not make it any less important and the SAPC inspectors have already started asking for evidence of CPD when inspections are being done in pharmacies for the registration of the premises or for registration as facilities for tutoring.

The Pharmacy CPD programme will focus on the following objectives:

In this system you will identify your own learning needs and then measure your growth in the performance of your practice against the needs you have identified. The difficult part will be to identify your learning needs as this will be intricately tied up with your own business plan and/or career path. Whatever your own needs, a successful professional must stay abreast of current knowledge, attitudes and practises.
